The British Board of Film Classification has awarded Fifty Shades of Grey a rating that bans kids 17 and under from seeing the film.

The film, which is based on the erotic book of the same name by E.L. James, was given the “18” rating for “strong sex.” The BBFC did not offer any further reasoning.

According to the ratings board’s website, “no-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy/rent an 18 rated video. No 18 rated works are suitable for children.”

Fifty Shades of Grey scored a “R” rating in the United States, which isn’t as tough of a rating as the “18.” “R” requires that anyone 17 and under see the film with a parent or guardian.

It’s not surprising that the film would score such a strict rating in the United Kingdom given the source material, but a report from The Sunday Times today reveals that only 20% of Fifty Shades of Grey consists of sex scenes. In addition, previous reports have indicated that the film reportedly shies away from explicitly showing sex on screen. Expect to see more shadows than actual sex organs.

Do you think kids should be banned from seeing ‘Fifty Shades’?

We think the no-one-under-18 rule is a bit harsh. Perhaps it should be left up to the parents, not the BBFC, if the film should be viewed by minors. We won’t know how smart the decision was until we see the film ourselves next week.

Fifty Shades of Grey opens in theaters this Valentine’s Day.
