Fifty Shades of Grey’s movie will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, author E.L. James announced on her Twitter account today.

The female, British director helmed Nowhere Boy in 2009. Other than that, her career is pretty light.

UPDATE: The Wrap reports that Aaron Taylor-John will not audition for Christian. However, actress Felicity Jones is in the running to play Anastasia Steele.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, her husband, starred in Nowhere Boy. Spectators now believe that Aaron could be in contention for the role of Christian.

Now that a director has been selected, James, Taylor-Johnson, and screenwriter Kelly Marcel can move on to selecting cast members. Those who have read the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy are eagerly anticipating casting announcements concerning Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

It’s a safe bet to assume that Aaron Taylor-Johnson was at least considered when you look at the fact that he and Sam have already worked together before. His good looks certainly help too. They will have to screen test him (and other potential actors) with females who are interested in playing Anastasia.

Universal, who owns distribution rights for Fifty Shades of Grey, is hoping to release the film in summer 2014. The clock is ticking because the popularity of the book series has been waning over the past few months. Casting should move quickly now that they have the director, screenwriter, and producer all on board.

Sales of Fifty Shades of Grey were remarkable throughout 2012. The book was literally the most popular novel sold for the entire year.

Gus Van Sant was one of the directors in contention to direct. He went so far as to shoot a sex scene with Alex Pettyfer to prove his interest and vision.

Thanks to The Wrap for the casting news.
