Advanced tickets for Fifty Shades of Grey went on sale earlier this week, and now the film has managed to nab a Fandango record.

The online box office announced on Friday that Fifty Shades of Grey is the fastest-selling R-rated movie in the history of the 15-year-old website, topping a list that consists of Sex and the City 2 now in second place, The Hangover Part II, The Hangover Part III, and last year’s Gone Girl.

Fandango also says that Fifty Shades of Grey is experiencing the biggest first week of ticket sales for a non-sequel since the original Hunger Games movie, but the latter still holds that record.

It’s too early to know what this means for the opening weekend box office, but this news certainly suggests that it’s going to be a nice weekend for Universal.

For comparison’s sake: The previous R-rated record holder, Sex and the City 2, ended up grossing a total of $95 million in the United States and $288 million worldwide.

Fifty Shades of Grey is the book to film adaptation of the wildly popular erotic novel of the same name by E.L. James. The series consists of three books and was the top-selling novel in 2012 with tens of millions of copies purchased.

A huge readership and a natural curiosity will surely bring out large numbers of theatergoers on February 13.

On the most recent episode of Hype, released yesterday, we shared our thoughts on attending midnight screenings. This writer wants to go to one, but other co-hosts were less than interested.
