Your mileage may vary on the Fifty Shades trilogy, but the latest – and final – installment in the franchise is dominating the weekend Box Office.

Fifty Shades Freed opened at 3,678 locations across the United States over the weekend, as well as 57 markets internationally. “The Climax” – as the movie has been referred to in marketing material – has finally pushed the Fifty Shades franchise over a billion dollars.

Domestically, Freed made $38.8 million, edging out Peter Rabbit at $25 million. The 15:17 to Paris, the Clint Eastwood directed drama, followed with $12.6 million.

In the international market, Freed has totaled $98.1 million since its February 6 opening, making it the biggest overseas launch of 2018.

Germany came out on top internationally, sharing $10.7 million of that total. The U.K. came close behind, with $8.8 million, followed by France with $8.7 million.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it is likely that Freed will receive a bump in earnings. However, with Black Panther opening on 16 February, it is going to have some stiff competition.

The synopsis of Fifty Shades Freed reads, “Believing they’ve left behind the shadowy figures from the past, billionaire Christian Grey and his new wife, Anastasia, fully embrace their inextricable connection and shared life of luxury. Just as the Greys begin to step into their new roles, sinister events come to light and jeopardize their happy ending before it even begins.”
