For the first time ever, a female soccer player will be featured next to Lionel Messi on the cover of a FIFA game.

EA has revealed the new covers for FIFA 16, and soccer fans were positively surprised to see both male and female players for the first time in the game’s history.

FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is still on the cover, as he has been since FIFA 13, but this year he’s joined by a couple of different female stars, depending on your location.

The Canadian game cover will feature team captain Christine Sinclair, with the American cover showing Messi alongside USA forward Alex Morgan. In Australia, native Steph Catley has landed the coveted spot.

Alex Morgan reacted to the news in a press statement, saying, “It is an incredible honor to be one of the first women featured on the cover of EA Sports’ FIFA. I know people all over the world play this game and I’m really excited that FIFA 16 is putting such an important spotlight on women’s soccer.”

EA’s cover reveal follows the announcement earlier this year that FIFA 16 would include 12 playable women’s teams. This is the first time since the game’s 1993 launch that women’s teams have been made available.

Internationally, soccer is traditionally considered a male sport, with women’s teams neither celebrated nor endorsed as much as men’s teams.

However, this is slowly beginning to change, as the media has begun to report stories of wage inequality, and institutionalized industry sexism against female players.

In the U.S., women’s soccer had a major popularity boost this year, as the American team FIFA Women’s World Cup swept the floor, scoring 5-2 against Japan in the final.
