Vanessa Helsing is the latest in a line of mythical vampire hunters in Syfy’s upcoming TV remake of Van Helsing.

The 2004 movie Van Helsing, despite starring the prolific Hugh Jackman and being generally appreciated by fans, failed to make a huge impression in Hollywood.

But never let sleeping franchises lie, apparently, because The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Syfy is picking up the story for a female-led TV series.

Billy & Billie writer Neil LaBute will serve as showrunner on the reboot (or sequel, technically), which picks up five years in the future. As the show opens, lead character Vanessa Helsing is resurrected, waking up to discover that vampires have taken over the world.

Speaking about the new series, LaBute says, “I am extremely excited to create a unique, character-driven action series that will move the traditional vampire tropes into bold and unexpected new territories. This is a wonderful chance for us to forge great stories and unforgettable characters and throw them into a world where the stakes – both dramatic and personal – are tremendously high.”

The Van Helsing TV show is set to return the character to its Dracula roots: Before he got his own movie, Professor Abraham van Helsing was originally a side-character in Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror novel Dracula, a vampire hunter and Count Dracula’s arch-nemesis.

Vanessa Helsing is, in THR’s words, “the next in a lineage of warriors who must lead mankind against a world controlled by vampires.” In other words… she’s a Vampire Slayer.

In a world overrun by vampires, Vanessa possesses “unique power” over them, and is, “essentially humanity’s last hope” in the fight against the forces of darkness. She alone can stand against them, she is the chosen one, etc.

Obvious Buffy-parallels aside (or maybe because of them), this sounds like a cool idea. And, as Supergirl and Agent Carter are currently proving, the TV audience is ready for a new batch of kickass heroines.

Vanessa Helsing: The Vampire Slayer can join the new Xena: The Warrior Princess, fighting for viewers opposite the Gilmore Girls and Full House reboots. Now we just need that Spice Girls reunion and we truly can party like it’s 1999!

The 13-episode series will begin production in January, and is set to premiere in the fall of 2016.
