As the start of production gets underway on AMC’s zombie drama spinoff series Fear The Walking Dead, new details about the show have been released.

Although the pilot was shot earlier this year in Los Angeles, Fear The Walking Dead is now shooting the remaining five episodes of its six-episode season in Vancouver, Canada, AMC announced today. The network says that they will return to Los Angeles for some additional filming “at a later date.”

To mark the start of production, co-creator Robert Kirkman offered a couple of new details about the series and a great behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the pilot was released. In this preview we get the sense that the show will have a dark theme as the creators discuss the project:

Most interestingly, the show will look at the ignorance of people in the early days of the outbreak — when no one knew anything about the infection. “Fear the Walking Dead takes us back to the earlier, more dangerous, more terrifying days of The Walking Dead,” he said. “A time when danger was lurking around every corner and the thing mostly likely to get you killed was your own ignorance of the rapidly changing world around you. The stakes are going to be higher and the ride more intense. We’re going to show people all the insanity of civilization crumbling that Rick Grimes slept through. Buckle up.”

The “dysfunctional family” element also sounds intriguing, though one could argue that the family that’s formed on The Walking Dead is a dysfunctional family as well.

Added co-creator and showrunner David Erickson, “I could not be more thrilled to be continuing on this apocalyptic journey, dramatizing the horrific disintegration of society through the lens of a dysfunctional family. We’ve assembled a stellar cast and crew to tell our story — it’s going to be a great ride.”

Fear The Walking Dead stars Cliff Curtis, Kim Dickens, Frank Dilate, and Alycia Debnam Carey — the four of whom make up the “dysfunctional family” — and premieres in late summer before The Walking Dead season 6.
