John Green and Shailene Woodley have launched a #HairForHazel social media campaign asking fans to follow in Woodley’s footsteps by cutting their head and donating it.

Woodley is cutting her lengthy hair this weekend to prepare for her role as Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars movie. Producer Wyck Godfrey has promised photos of how she looks post-cut. Both he and director Josh Boone are flying from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles to be there for Woodley’s cut.

Since launching the Hair For Hazel initiative earlier this week, several people have proudly cut off their locks and plan on donating them to an organization called Children With Hair Loss. Instructions on how to donate can be found at the link.

Inspiring, right?

“There was a time when growing my hair out symbolized something for me, but the power of sharing that choice, sharing the ability to have long hair with someone feels far more powerful right now,” Woodley wrote in a blog post on Wednesday when speaking about cutting her hair and donating it. “I know what it feels like to have wind blow through my wavy locks, and I am over-the-top grateful I get to share that gift with another.”

The Fault in Our Stars begins filming at the end of this month in Pittsburgh. The film stars Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus. Laura Dern and Sam Trammell will portray Hazel’s parents. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2015.
