Ansel Elgort, who will play Gus in The Fault in Our Stars, is responding to criticism over he and co-star Shailene Woodley playing siblings in Divergent and then lovers in John Green’s book-to-film.

Elgort and Woodley have been shooting the book to film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent in Chicago since April. We’ve speculated in recent weeks that their acting chemistry in the movie helped Elgort nab the role of Gus in Fault.

Vulture caught up with Elgort at the premiere of After Earth over the weekend where they asked him if there would be a chemistry problem or if it would look like “incest.” Quotage:

“I think that’s the magic of being an actor,” he said. “You can do that and it’s not weird — people play different roles all the time, you know?” But people don’t usually go from brother to lover in quick succession, we pointed out. “No, not always,” Elgort admitted. “‪I feel like Shailene is the best actress I’ve ever met, who was good enough to read with, and I feel like I’m a pretty good actor, too, so I think it’s going to be no problem for us. It’ll be great.‬” So really, no squeamishness at all about this? “‪Acting is acting. We have chemistry as brother and sister, but we’re both good enough to have chemistry as lovers as well.‬”

Though the question is a valid one, we have to remember that the producers and John Green were in love with Elgort and Woodley’s screen test. The only issue we can imagine is seeing promotional material for Divergent with Caleb Prior, and then drawing comparisons to The Fault in Our Stars material when you see Gus.

In May we wrote about why this whole alleged “controversy” has been blown out of proportion.

Thanks, Vulture.
