Today we have our first look at Seth Gilliam in the role of Father Gabriel on The Walking Dead season 5, premiering this October.

The uneventful still, above, depicts Father Gabriel in front of a line of trees as the sun glistens on his face. Perhaps this is one of his early encounters with Rick and company as they’re making their way up to Washington D.C.

In the comic series by Robert Kirkman, Father Gabriel welcomes the humans into his church when they’re in need of a place to stay. The Father is looking to do some good deeds in light of past events.

Speaking to EW, where the new still debuted today, Gilliam spoke about preparing for his new role. He says he only read one of the Dead comic books, and it was the issue where Gabriel was introduced. “I didn’t read anything before that, and I haven’t read anything after that. I discovered from reading about the show that often times characters’ names and journeys are kind of crisscrossed and mismatched, so I thought if I did read too much I might be giving myself a lot of information that would be useless, or just outright wrong. So I figured, like with everything, I’d just take the script and try to fill him out the best I possibly can.”

Unfortunately, details about what his character will be up to on the television show weren’t unveiled. However, it’s likely that Father Gabriel will be at least a little similar to the character in the Walking Dead comic series.

Then again, if Kirkman and Scott M. Gimple didn’t tell him to read issues of The Walking Dead that he was introduced in, it’s likely that his character will be pretty different on television.
