Universal has announced that they are halting work on Fast & Furious 7.

Though reports of this decision had surfaced earlier, a statement by the studio was just released:

“Right now, all of us at Universal are dedicated to providing support to Paul’s immediate family and our extended ‘Fast & Furious’ family of cast, crew and filmmakers,” they write. “At this time we feel it is our responsibility to shut down production on ‘Fast & Furious 7′ for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise. We are committed to keeping ‘Fast & Furious’ fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it. Until then, we know they join us in mourning the passing of our dear friend Paul Walker.”

Fast & Furious 7 was in the midst of filming and reached its halfway point when Walker, one of the franchise’s stars, tragically died in an unrelated car accident over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Sources have indicated that one option for Fast & Furious 7 is to throw out what has been shot and do a rewrite without Walker’s character. Because of insurance the studio has on the film, an unpredictable accident like this one would cover the costs.

The film was set to hit theaters in July 11, 2014 and was on a fast production schedule to meet the release.
