New reports suggest that Charlize Theron is currently in talks to join Fast 8 as the sequel’s villain, bringing more female leads to a male-driven franchise.

Deadline reports that the actress has yet to see the script, but is in negotiations to join Fast 8 as the film’s villain, and it would be an exciting addition to a franchise that certainly needs an original spin to keep things fresh.

The team going after yet another bad guy would definitely feel a bit dull, and adding Charlize Theron as the villain instead would keep things interesting. The film’s script has yet to be finished, but filming will start later this year.

Apparently Kurt Russell was set to be Fast 8’s villain, after doing his best to help the team in Furious 7, but after the death of Paul Walker the script was rewritten, which has opened up the role for Charlize to join in on the billion dollar franchise.

Furious 7 took in a massive $1.5 billion worldwide, which resulted in three more films being greenlit. Vin Diesel recently announced the release dates for the upcoming films, with Fast 8 hitting theaters April 14, 2017, Fast & Furious 9 on April 19, 2019, and Fast & Furious 10 arriving April 2, 2021.

With the last film making more money than all of the previous films both domestically and internationally, Universal is most likely looking to expand the franchise to an even wider audience, and adding Theron to the cast would easily increase its exposure.

This past November we found out that Universal was in the process of developing spinoffs focusing on different characters. Vin Diesel said, “We’ve written out story lines for various characters. We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”

We can only hope that Charlize Theron decides to join in on the fun, as she would be a welcome addition to the franchise. Hopefully we’ll find out more about her involvement in Fast 8 as the film heads into production later this year.

The actress can be seen next reprising her role as Ravenna in The Huntsman: Winter’s War when it’s released on April 22, 2016.
