A tantalizing new photo from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald reveals Young Newt Scamander in Defense Against the Dark Arts about to take on a boggart.
The new photo was revealed by Entertainment Weekly and depicts a different actor (Joshua Shea) playing the future magizoologist.
Though there’s no mention of it in the article, this is likely the scene WB first shared with press in April, in which Dumbledore (Jude Law) is teaching a DADA class with then Hogwarts student Newt Scamander in attendance. According to media who saw the scene in spring, Newt’s boggart is a desk — because he’s afraid of an office job.
It’s a flashback scene that opens up Newt’s roots: He ain’t interested in a standard indoors-y life.
The article does not make note of the fact that Dumbledore, as far as we’ve known, was never a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. So for now, we’re left to speculate how Dumbledore went from DADA to Transfiguration.
Many fans are wondering why Rowling has never revealed this information until this film series, and how being a DADA teacher as opposed to a Transfiguration teacher could serve the plot of the film. Let’s hope it’s more than being with Newt when he sees his desk boggart.
