Warner Brothers has announced that a Fantastic Beasts sequel is officially in development and will open two years after the first.

Mark your calendars: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 (or whatever they end up calling it*) will be released November 16, 2018. The studio also revealed that five-time Wizarding World director David Yates (Order of the Phoenix through Beasts 1) will be returning for Beasts 2.

Producers David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram will also return.

Interestingly, WB released a small synopsis for FB 2 which teases dark and difficult times ahead: “The second Fantastic Beasts movie moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances.”

Allegiances? Not sure what that part could mean, but we’re guessing the “dark time” has something to do with equality for wizards and witches, who — in 1920s North America — are barely allowed to interact with No-Majs thanks to Rappaports Law.

Warner Brothers has already set a date for a third (and maybe final) Fantastic Beasts film as well: November 2020.

News of a sequel won’t come as a shock to anyone who’s been following the Fantastic Beasts project. We learned a couple years ago that it would grow into a trilogy, and recently Yates revealed that Rowling has already completed a first draft of the sequel’s script.
