Turns out there was one more death in J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them that wasn’t seen in the movie.

Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts script book, which was released worldwide last Friday, has one significant difference from the movie: Credence’s adopted sister Chasity died at the winds of her brother’s Obscurus. She’s pictured above right when the family is visiting Henry Shaw Senior’s office.

Her death occurs in the same scene where he kills his mother, Mary Lou. Here’s the passage from the Fantastic Beasts script book (beginning at the bottom of page 221):

The place is destroyed – moonlight filters through gaps in the roof, and Chastity lies dead amid debris from the attack. Graves slowly enters the church, wand still drawn. Eerie sobbing can be heard from somewhere in the building.

Mary Lou’s body lies on the floor in front of him, the marks on her face visible in the moonlight. Graves considers the corpse: A realization dawning on his face – no horror, merely wariness and intense interest.

For Chastity (played by Jenn Murray) to die is interesting — unlike Mary Lou and Shaw, Chastity didn’t actively do or say anything in the film to Credence that would’ve pissed the troubled wizard off (other than being a part of her mother’s whole I-Hate-Wizards thing). Perhaps her death was to show how the Obscurus can be difficult for the host to control.

It’s unclear why the scene revealing Chastity’s death was cut from the film. Presumably it was shot and will appear on the Fantastic Beasts DVD/Blu-ray.

Is Credence alive at the end of ‘Fantastic Beasts’?

There are still two Barebones who are definitely alive: Modesty and Credence. Though the latter’s ending was left up in the air (save for that little whisp of smoke we saw rise), producer David Heyman told Cinema Blend they shot a scene in which his survival is confirmed. The scene depicted “him getting on a boat, maybe a boat with Newt, maybe not, and heading off out of New York,” according to Heyman.

So far this death is the only noticeable difference between the book and film. Frustratingly, the Fantastic Beasts script book does not include 100% of Rowling’s original script. Deleted scenes that were shot, like the Ilvermorny School Song sung by Queenie, are neither in the book or the movie. We expect many to surface on the Fantastic Beasts DVD/Blu-ray next year.
