Learn more about Katherine Waterston’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them character Tina Goldstein in this brand new interview.

It’s officially fall, which means Fantastic Beasts is a tick closer: The movie premieres November 18, and the cast is slowly gearing up for the press season.

One line of enquiry we can hopefully help nip in the bud: Whether the main female character Porpentina Goldstein is ‘the new Hermione.’

In an interview with Collider, Katherine Waterston certainly had a no-nonsense answer when she was asked to reflect on “taking up the mantle” of Hermione:

“It never occurred to me to compare myself to her just because we’re both female, in any way. You know, they’re totally different characters and I don’t feel like I’m stepping into her shoes simply because I’m a woman. It’s just amazing to be a part of this world that means so much to people and I don’t have any problem with considering it in that way. It just never occurred to me to think of it in those terms and probably it would make me nervous at the thought of it (laughs) because she was so good in those films. So, I just don’t think about that.”

At least it’ll likely be an equal-opportunity comparison, since Eddie Redmayne is almost certainly gonna be referred to as ‘the next Harry Potter’ in the months to come.

Still, it’s refreshing to see Waterston reflect on Porpentina with such a fresh perspective, removing gender from the equation altogether.

On the same topic, Waterston also has some interesting observations to how the Wizarding World of 1920s New York is divided:

“I feel like there’s the period the film is set in, but then there’s also a lot of sort of magical permission a little bit in the world we’re creating. It’s doesn’t seem to be divided by race or sex in ways that the world was in the 20s or in the way America was in the 20s. We have a female President. Is that a secret? There are different rules than our world.”
