Reports suggest that Harry Potter director David Yates is set to return to J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world as he steps in to helm the first Fantastic Beasts film.

Variety reports that Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films, has agreed to return for the first Fantastic Beasts spinoff film which is based off of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

While no deal has been set yet, sources confirm that WB and Yates are currently in negotiations. It should help that Harry Potter producer David Heyman is also producing Fantastic Beasts and has a great relationship with Yates after working on multiple films with the director.

Warner Bros. announced Fantastic Beasts back in September and revealed that the new series is the brainchild of Potter author J.K. Rowling, who is writing the first movie’s screenplay.

The author revealed, “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.”

Yates is currently filming his Tarzan reboot until November, which is currently filming in Leavesden Studios, which means the director shouldn’t have to move too far at all when he begins production on the first Fantastic Beasts film.

We recently found out that WB may be planning to make the film into a trilogy, with the films being spaced two years apart from one another so that Rowling has enough time to balance writing the screenplays with her numerous other projects.

Fantastic Beasts will be filmed in Leavesden Studios once again – the same studio in which they shot all eight of the Harry Potter movies.

Prisoner of Azkaban helmer Alfonso Cuaron was offered the directorial gig earlier this year but turned it down.
