Following yesterday’s updates from WizardingWorld.com concerning Fantastic Beasts 3, Variety has shared some new information about the speed bumps the franchise has hit and what the studio is doing to make the threequel a hit with the fans.

According to the report, which is framed around WB being eager to course correct the franchise after a messy sequel, Fantastic Beasts 3 “is expected to put more of a spotlight on Jude Law’s young Albus Dumbledore and set more action at Hogwarts.” Variety describes it as taking “the series back to its Hogwarts roots” (Though this particular film series was never rooted in Hogwarts).

Variety adds that Warner Brothers “still expects” five films for Fantastic Beasts, as Rowling announced in October 2016, and that the execs are “high on the script they’ve seen, believing it represents a big step forward in quality.”

And here’s either a scary or an exciting nugget for longtime Harry Potter fans: Fantastic Beasts 3 is “said to pack in more breadcrumbs for Potter enthusiasts to obsess over.” Hopefully that means we’ll be getting more answers than questions — something that can’t be said for The Crimes of Grindelwald. Let’s also hope that these breadcrumbs all check out canon wise.

On the news that seven-time Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves is returning to help J.K. Rowling write the script, Variety says that the duo “get along well and have an established working relationship,” He was also brought in for “his inherent understanding of the world” that will “help Rowling better service the fans for part three.”

Though it started with a primary focus on Newt, the Fantastic Beasts film series is clearly heading towards the big duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, which ended the Global Wizarding War. Fans are also expecting to hear more about how Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s relationship broke down, and how Ariana Dumbledore lost her life. Bits of this were hinted at in The Crimes of Grindelwald but will hopefully be expanded on in the remaining three movies.

Fantastic Beasts 3 will hit theaters November 2021, with production set to begin this spring.
