Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell is a refreshing novel that will capture readers with its honest look at being a freshman in college and self discovery.

Fangirl introduces us to Cath and Wren, twin sisters who have always loved Simon Snow. Cath writes fanfiction, hangs out in forums and isn’t ready to give him up even though Wren has. Wren has decided that she wants to forge her own path in college and leaves Cath on her own for the first time.

Cath is a protagonist that readers will not only understand, but love. She is terrified to move forward and is unsure in social situations. The college experience felt so real. While the book does contain romance it is not the focus of Cath’s experiences. Her story truly develops through the experience of college and learning how to navigate the unknown. Cath has to deal with finding routine, struggling in class, living with a stranger, and worry about her family.

Fangirl is populated with strong, well written characters. First there is Cath’s roommate, Regan. Her blunt honesty adds a level of humor to the novel you don’t expect. Regan is seems cold but she and Cath find a way to be friends even though they are so different. Then there is Levi, who is too charismatic for words. Levi is everything that Cath is not. He is social, friendly and would help anyone anyway her could. Cath is exceptionally more introverted but the two of them compliment each other perfectly.

Fangirl is a great example of what New Adult novels should be. It takes a realistic look at being a freshman in college with wit and humor. It isn’t a story just about finding a boyfriend or romance. It is a story that explores family and the complex relationships between parents, children, and siblings.

Driven by smart, real characters, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell is a must read.
