False Sight by Dan Krokos yanks readers back into the world of False Memory, where super-human teens make their way in a vortex of secrets, sword fights, and sacrifice.

Dan Krokos’s False Sight continues the story of Miranda, a teenaged girl with an exceptional set of skills – and a terrible responsibility. Miranda and her friends are “Roses” – young women and men who, along with Mission Impossible-esqe gadetry and fighting skills, have the genetically-engineered power to create waves of fear with their minds.

As the sequel to False Memory (released last year), False Sight incorporates many of the elements introduced in the first novel. Miranda’s impressive fighting skills, complicated relationships with her fellow Roses (each cloned from one of five different progenitors) and the pressing urgency of a world in peril remain familiar touchstones throughout the story. The similarities between False Memory and False Sight are less significant than their differences though, and author Dan Krokos gets down to the work of distinguishing the sequel with heart-pounding speed.

After an unforeseen interruption rips their team apart, Miranda and her remaining allies are forced to abandon their attempts to integrate into a normal life. But what begins as a high-tech chase quickly becomes something vastly different, as Krokos plays out and maximizes the implications left over from False Memory that even the answers to Miranda’s mysteries may not be what they seem. The sci-fi elements of the first book soon seem tame in comparison, as False Sight takes off into realms unknown – literally.

But Krokos wisely keeps the story grounded in his characters, even as the plot dances between science-fiction and fantasy. Though her skills make her seem super-human, Miranda’s insecurities and personal struggles for bravery keep her a relatable heroine. And one of False Sight‘s strongest moments pulls back the curtain of mystery as far as it will go, but still remains intriguing thanks to the unexpected, but incredibly gratifying, players involved.

Ultimately, False Sight is a dizzying ride that will pull readers along on a journey they never expected to take. Though there are a few bumps along the way, Miranda’s story remains gripping and slickly-paced, sprinkled with surprisingly sweet moments. A perfect summer read, False Sight offers an explosive conclusion that will have readers begging Dan Krokos for the final act – coming next summer – in this fresh and exhilarating story.
