Lauren Kate’s popular YA novel Fallen is finally getting the big-screen makeover. Was it worth waiting for? Judge the first trailer for yourself.

Fallen is a YA romance-fantasy about a 17-year-old girl named Luce, who is sent to the ominous Sword & Cross reform school for a crime she didn’t commit.

Luce soon meets two mysterious strangers, to whom she feels inexplicably drawn. The plot thickens when she discovers that they are fallen angels, and have in fact been competing for her heart for centuries.

And her choice won’t just determine her own happiness — the very fates of Heaven and Hell depend on which boy Luce chooses to love.

The first trailer shows Luce arriving at the academy, and meeting the boys. The love triangle is evident from the start, but there’s clearly a lot more going on.

The movie adaptation stars Addison Timlin as Luce, with Jeremy Irvine and Harrison Gilbertson as her celestial courtiers. It’s directed by Scott Hicks, from a script by Michael Ross.

Also starring are Joely Richardson, Lola Kirke, Sianoa Smit-McPhee, Daisy Head, Hermione Corfield, and Malachi Kirby.

Interestingly, Fallen does not yet have a domestic release date. The movie comes out in Singapore and Thailand in November, but the American Fallen fandom has to rely on word-of-mouth and online hype to secure a wide release.
