Buckle in, kids. A reboot of the ’90s action flick Face/Off is coming our way thanks to the powers that be at Paramount Studios.

The ’90s were a crazy time. Fashion was exciting, the music was invigorating, and our action flicks were…well, they were something. One great example is the movie Face/Off, which is about a terrorist named Castor Troy (played by Nicholas Cage) facing off with an FBI agent named Sean Archer (played by John Travolta).

According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, a reboot of the movie is officially in the works over at Paramount. Oren Uziel, the writer behind 22 Jump Street, is penning the script, and no casting announcements have been made yet.

And yeah, we get it. Reboots are all the rage right now, and it seems that movie and television studios all over are taking on the strategy best explained by Bo Burnham as, “We’ll stop beating this dead horse when it stops spitting out money.”

But a Face/Off reboot? Y’all, that movie was buck wild and a quintessential example of the over-the-top action flicks that were all the rage in the ’90s.

Haven’t seen the movie yourself? Here’s the basic gist: Face/Off is about FBI agent Sean Archer, played by John Travolta, who is chasing down a terrorist named Castor Troy, played by Nicolas Cage. So while you might think the “face-off” means the two of them are facing off, you’d only be partially correct.

Because things take a turn for the bonkers when Archer decides to literally remove his face and exchange it for Troy’s face after Troy is severely injured in a plane crash, allowing Archer to go undercover as Troy. BUT! When Troy wakes up, he asks the surgeon to put Archer’s face on him.

So yeah, Face/Off is about a terrorist and an FBI agent facing off, but also it’s about them, you know, literally taking their faces off.

It was an outrageous movie and worked pretty darn well for moviegoers in the ’90s. But will it work for a modern audience? Who knows, but we’re about to find out.

It’s still early days for the Face/Off reboot, so we’ll have to see what adventures will wait for us in the new version of the flick. If nothing else, this is going to rekindle interest in the original film, which is just so very outrageous that everyone should check it out at least once.

We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks on the Face/Off reboot.
