Peter Jackson shared a photo on his official Facebook page this morning which revealed that Ian McKellen is now finished with his role as Gandalf.

“Seconds ago we finished our last shot with Gandalf,” wrote Jackson. “The end of an incredible adventure that began in 1999. I’m feeling very sad right now.”

He attached the following photo which depicts Jackson and McKellen arm-in-arm.

Jackson seems quite confident that this will be his last time shooting a J.R.R. Tolkien movie despite the fact that there is more material to be adapted. Earlier this year he explicitly told fans that they were filming pick ups for The Hobbit which would be the last time he ever shoots in Tolkien’s worlds.

Fans have been hoping that Jackson and Warner Bros. would obtain the rights to Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, but that does not seem to be in the works at this time.

Perhaps Jackson will consider another re-entry into Hobbiton once he’s completely finished with The Hobbit.

The second film in The Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug, opens in theaters on December 14. The final film, There and Back Again, hits theaters December 13, 2014.

The series stars Martin Freeman in the role of Bilbo Baggins.

Earlier this week Jackson unveiled what specific scenes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s Extended Edition would hold. It is expected to hit store shelves later this year in time for the holiday season.
