Ewan McGregor is currently in talks to play the adult Danny Torrance in the sequel to Stephen King’s smash hit novel, The Shining, called Doctor Sleep.

Film adaptations of Stephen King novels are doing quite well lately. Not only did 2017 bring the premiere of the hit, updated film adaptation of the novel It, but the Netflix original Gerald’s Game, based off of the book of the same name, also pulled in great viewing numbers.

So it isn’t terribly surprising to hear that, as Deadline reports, studios have fast-tracked a film adaptation of The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, that King published back in 2013. And right now, the actor leading the pack to play the main character, Danny Torrance, is the one and only Ewan McGregor.

In Doctor Sleep, we catch up with adult Danny who is still reeling with his horrific experiences at the Overlook Hotel and his own “shining” powers while also fighting the same demons of alcoholism and anger that his father fought. When Danny meets a young child who has the shining in a more powerful way than he’s ever seen, Danny must work to overcome his past and protect the child from those who would wish to do her harm.

It’s an interesting follow-up to the 1977 novel, and McGregor could do an excellent job portraying the older, troubled Danny. The movie is set to be directed by Mike Flanagan, who directed Gerald’s Game and Oculus, and will be following the story as laid out in the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film. We’ll be watching to see how this film develops.
