Ewan McGregor has joined two Academy Award winners in the much anticipated film adapation of August: Osage County!

Deadline reports that Ewan McGregor will be joining Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep in the dark comedy, August: Osage County. Set in Oklahoma, McGregor will play Bill Fordham, who is Barbra’s (Roberts) “estranged” husband and the son-in-law of “pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston (Streep).” McGregor’s character is a college professor, who left his wife for one of his students, but still tries and wants to be in the picture for his children. The plot follows the Weston/Fordham family, which is extremely dysfunctional for many reasons including severe alcohol and drug addictions.

Originally a play written by Tracy Letts, it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2008 and has also won numerous Tony Awards. The film is being produced by George Clooney and Grant Hezlov, and directed by John Wells (The Company Men). Additionally, the film will also star Chris Cooper, Margo Martindale, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin, and Dermot Mulroney.

McGregor was most recently seen in Beginners alongside Christopher Plummer, who won an Academy Award earlier this year for Best Supporting Actor. McGregor was also recently seen in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen with Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas. His next film, The Impossible, just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and follows a true story of a family caught in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

What do you think of McGregor’s new role in August: Osage County? Have you seen the play on stage, and if so, did you enjoy it? Are you excited it will be a film adaptation?
