This marks the third time Denmark has won Eurovision, after 1963 and 2000 – and, coincidentally, their previous victory also came from a contest hosted by Sweden.

The runner up was Azerbaijan, with Farid Mammadov’s “Hold Me.” I was rooting for this very inventive performance, but they fell short of repeating their 2011 win. Still, Azerbaijan continues their streak of never finishing outside the top 8, the only country to have done so.

Third place went to Ukraine, with Zlata Ognevich’s “Gravity.” This is their fourth finish in the top three, and they were neck and neck with Azerbaijan for second place. Watch their performance here:

Norway and Russia rounded out the top five. Host country Sweden gave a rather disappointing performance that didn’t even rank in the top half. But that can be overlooked in favor of the glorious show they put on, which included a very fun ditty about Sweden itself, and a rousing rendition of ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It All.”

Some big names failed to make it far, including Bonnie Tyler for the U.K. and Cascada for Germany, both of whom were ranked in the lowest third. But rankings are not everything, because some of my favorite numbers did not get a lot of votes. Witness the beautiful duet “Waterfall” by Georgia and the comedic “Marry Me” by Finland.

Surprisingly, Ireland landed in last place with only five points – I guess voters would have preferred Jedward to return? Do you think they should have received more votes?

If you’re European, whom did you vote for? If you’re not, whom would you have voted for? And what did you think of this year’s Eurovision?
