The classic 1985 sci-fi novel Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card is being adapted into a movie, and a photo giving us a first look was revealed today!

Set in a future military and battle school in Space, the picture shows Asa Butterfield (Hugo) as the protagonist Ender, apparently being scolded by Harrison Ford (Star WarsIndiana Jones) portraying Colonel Graff. Graff runs the military school Ender attends and personally recruits Ender himself.

EW explains that in the picture, “[Ender’s] facing off with the imposing Colonel Graff  over whether his emails to home are being blocked. It’s telling that the two characters are clashing over communication, since they’ve got major communication issues with each other. In the novel, Ender could never be sure whether Graff was manipulating him, or whether he simply saw great potential in him and wanted to foster it.”

Director Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) stated that he is maintaining the novel’s integrity and staying as close to the plot as possible. He said that he’s keeping the emotion-monitoring chip on the back of Ender’s neck (see below), and he promises to keep the “dark ending,” by saying “That ending — and the complex moral questions that it raises — is one of the reasons why I love the book.” But We don’t know much more about how he’s keeping any other aspects right now. We’ll have to wait for the trailer, and then the film to know for sure!

Interesting, due to the many child actors in the film, it was somewhat difficult to actually shoot the film. Hood also stated that the children still attended school for at least three hours everyday, plus homework. So, the time shooting with Butterfield and other children actors was very constricted – which forced the other actors to be readily prepared with their lines.

Produced by Lionsgate, Ender’s Game will hit theaters on November 1, 2013 – which is just before Lionsgate will also release Catching Fire on November 22, 2013! There’s a good chance these two futuristic films will be hyped up at Comic-Con next summer!
