We all yearn for attention from one of our favorite authors, J.K. Rowling. But unless you cry at the end of The Casual Vacancy, don’t expect her to have much to say to you.

“Did you cry?,” asked Rowling of ABC’s Cynthia McFadden when she visited the author in Scotland and the topic turned to the overall message of the story.

“Yes.”

“Well, you see,” Rowling replied, “I don’t want to say ‘good.’ But I would have nothing to say to the person who didn’t cry at the end of this book. Nothing. The end is bad. Sorry.”

Elsewhere in the interview, which aired this morning on Good Morning America, Rowling reiterated that there can be no movie and certainly no sequel. By the end, you will know why. Watch on ABC’s website.

Earlier today, Rowling hosted a live event at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and met fans for the first time in years. She participated in a Q&A where she joked a bit about her obsession with death. She laughed, saying, “I kept killing people” in the Harry Potter novels. And said that death obsesses her, but she can’t explain why. She wonders if it was because so many people around her died when she was a teenager. Or if it’s because her mother died when she was only 45 and Rowling was in her twenties at the time.

The Casual Vacancy was released worldwide today.
