The proposed Empire spinoff centered on Cookie Lyon won’t be going forward at Fox— but that doesn’t mean the series is dead in the water.

Update (12/14/2020): Fox has opted not to green light an upcoming spinoff of the hit music drama series, Empire.

Spearheaded by Empire creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, the spinoff would have found Golden Globe winner Taraji P. Henson taking center stage as the unforgettable Cookie Lyon.

Though the Cookie centric series won’t find a home at Fox, that doesn’t necessarily mean the creators are giving up on the idea.

According to Deadline, Disney TV Studio’s 20th Television (the studio behind both Empire and the proposed spinoff) is currently in the process o shopp8ing the series around to ABC as well as Hulu.

So whlie there’s still hope for the spinoff, it’s looking like fans will just have to wait when it comes to seeing if Cookie Lyon’s story will live on.

Original Story (7/23/2020):

Empire might be coming to a close, but Cookie Lyon could soon be reigning supreme over at Fox.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Empire star Taraji P. Henson is currently working with Fox to develop a follow up series to the hit music drama.

The proposed new series (which has not yet been given the green light by the network) would follow Cookie Lyon as she heads across the country to take Los Angeles by storm.

The fact that Fox is already looking to secure Empire’s future is bound to be cause for excitement for fans of the Emmy Award nominated series.

At the same time, news of a spinoff likely won’t come as much of a shock to those who’ve been following updates with regards to the series.

Back in April, we learned that co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong were already exploring ways to continue the story following the show’s series finale, which aired on April 21, 2020.

Specifically, Strong pointed to the fact that the series finale fans would be tuning in to was not the finale the creators imagined. Instead, the show found itself cut a bit short due to the current coronavirus pandemic, which caused many a studio to cease production and shut down.

At the same time, Daniels had hinted that he believes “there’s more to do with these characters,” so it makes sense that a Cookie Lyon spinoff might, in fact, have been the more they were teasing just a few months back.

Per EW’s report, it also seems like a few more of the Lyons could return for the potential spinoff, although, given that the project still seems to be in the early stages of development, it’s likely too soon to say.

Either way, we’ll be curious to find out whether or not the proposed Empire Cookie spinoff gets off the ground over at Fox!
