Fox’s Empire may soon be delivering its series finale to viewers at home, but that doesn’t mean the show’s creators are closing the door on the Lyon family for good.

Like many shows currently on television, Fox’s Empire found its series cut short due to the current coronavirus pandemic.

For fans of the hit music drama, that means that the series will not, in fact be serving up its last two hours of originally scheduled content due to the fact that the last two episodes weren’t produced before COVID-19 forced studios to shutter to a halt.

Instead, the episode which airs on April 21 will officially serve as the show’s series finale.

Interestingly though, the April 21 episode (titled “Home Is On The Way”) may not be the last fans see of the Lyon family— at least, if co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong have anything to say about it.

In a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels spoke about the show’s forthcoming final episode, while also hinting that fans should stay optimistic about the possibility of revisiting the hip-hop drama’s unforgettable cast of characters somewhere down the line.

“I think there’s more to do with these characters, and I’m heartbroken we aren’t getting to shoot the finale we wanted — at least not yet,” wrote Daniels in the statement. “But you know what they say in television? Stay tuned! To the Empire!”

Meanwhile, Strong elaborated on the series’ originally intended finale in a statement of his own.

“The episode airing on April 21 was never meant to be the series finale, but due to current events it will likely be the last one our fans see for a while,” said Strong. “We had an ending for the series planned that we all loved, and hopefully someday we’ll be able to film it and give the series its proper conclusion. But we hope everyone tunes in to our last original episode, because the work done by our cast and crew deserves to be seen by the widest audience possible. Big thank you to Fox for being our home for these many years. And here’s hoping this isn’t the end!”

The Empire series finale airs April 21 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
