NBC is adamant about finding a gay sitcom that works for the network. The peacock has teamed up with Ellen DeGeneres to develop a lesbian-themed comedy.

The two entertainment powerhouses are working with a script by Two Broke Girls writer Liz Feldman who wrote for the daytime talk show Ellen in 2007. The show reportedly focuses on “a lesbian who becomes pregnant just as her straight male best friend meets and marries the love of his life,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

NBC has made recent attempts at bringing gay comedies to the network in the past year but hasn’t had much luck. Last year’s The New Normal starring Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha failed to take off, and their latest gay comedy Sean Saves the World hasn’t been performing well in the ratings so far.

On the other hand, DeGeneres had great success with her ABC sitcom Ellen from 1994 to 1998. She came out as a lesbian during season 4 in a scene that co-starred Oprah Winfrey as her therapist. It was the most popular episode to date, but ABC pulled back on promotion for the show for its fifth season reportedly because of her now-open sexuality.

Times have changed and now networks are comfortable with sitcoms centered around gay characters so long as the material is right. We think Ellen may be able to pull off a successful show with her old writing partner Feldman and are eager to see where this project goes. Don’t expect to see it until the fall 2014 television season at the earlier.

Thanks, THR.
