When asked in a new interview with LBGT-interests magazine The Advocate if she’s ever played a gay character, actress Elizabeth Banks said she thinks Effie may be a lesbian.

“I don’t think I have — although Effie Trinket in ‘The Hunger Games’ might be gay,” she said. “My vision of the Capitol is pansexual like ancient Rome, where everybody’s doing everybody.”

While Banks doesn’t appear to be going off of solid information she’s heard from a reputable source (say, author Suzanne Collins), it does look like she’s given it some thought in the past. Perhaps there was some light discussion about the idea on set too.

The Hunger Games book series never made reference to a specific relationship for Effie. The character’s sexuality is completely irrelevant to the storyline, though we know many readers would’ve loved to learn more about Effie outside of her passion for fashion.

If it were true that Effie is a lesbian, it would be one of the most significant “coming outs” for a fictional character since J.K. Rowling told the world in 2007 that Albus Dumbledore was gay. Following the revelation, actor Michael Gambon would make jokes on the set about the character’s robes.

Though Collins has completed The Hunger Games series, the trilogy is currently being adapted into a four-part movie franchise. Catching Fire will open in theaters this November, and the second trailer is due out this Saturday.

Have you ever given thought to the idea of Effie or another ‘Hunger Games’ character being gay?

We sure haven’t.

Thanks, Mike and HuffPo.
