Pitch Perfect co-star Elizabeth Banks will direct the highly-anticipated sequel for Universal.

Banks will also reprise her role as a capella commentator Gail. The news was revealed by the Hollywood Reporter on Monday.

Said Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley in a statement, “Elizabeth originated the idea for Pitch Perfect and was instrumental in making the first film such a huge success. She brings an enormous amount of energy and experience to everything she works on and we’re thrilled that she is making her feature directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2.”

Speaking briefly to Slashfilm late last year, Banks was coy about the sequel but was eager to please. “I have no hints on the story other than to say I’m guaranteeing a lot of laughs,” she said.

A release date for Pitch Perfect 2 is not known, but the studio is reportedly targeting a summer 2015 release.

Pitch Perfect screenwriter Kay Cannon is returning to write the sequel.

Jason Moore directed the original, then went on to direct the “Cups” music video starring Anna Kendrick.

Banks is best known for her role as Effie in The Hunger Games film series. You’ll see her in Mockingjay, Part 1 this November.

Though news on the Pitch Perfect sequel has been slow over the past few months, we did hear that a holiday album featuring the cast is in development. Though it was expected to drop this past holiday season, it now looks like the album may debut this holiday or next.

We’re eager to see Banks bring her vision to the project
