Elementary focuses on the man Sherlock has become in his recovery from substance abuse. But what do we know about the man he left behind?

The saying goes, “when you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no mater how improbable, must be the truth.” But what happens with the improbable is something that not even Sherlock Holmes can bear to justify as truth? On tonight’s Elementary season 3, episode 16, Sherlock and Joan revisit the months following Irene Adler’s death and attempt to trace the steps of a high Sherlock Holmes.

Last week, bodies turned up across Manhattan with an unusual signature, bags of cash, left by the killer. A large airline company is in limbo to pay out a settled sum to victims of a plane crash, or pay out each person individually based on their life expectancy or employment. One victim takes it upon herself to get the maximum payout for her husband’s death by trying to prove that all human life is not equal.

Meanwhile, Joan makes herself at home in the brownstone once again, creating her own office space in the basement.

There are no witty or sarcastic responses from Holmes this week as he switches places from investigator to suspect. Evidence from a crime committed at the height of his substance abuse connects Sherlock to the murder of a woman in the same time.
