Proximity to Sherlock Holmes comes with a cost. In the latter half of season 1 Joan became aware of the risks involved with pursing a career with the world’s foremost deductionist. After Sherlock’s departure to London at the close of season 3, Joan stepped up to the task of aiding the NYPD tackle a drug cartel. Her success in placing the ring leader, Elana March, behind bars proved her prowess. But it also gave her something Sherlock is all too familiar with, a vindictive enemy.

Andrew’s return to the states brought about a realization for Joan Watson; she is not okay with convention. Although Sherlock has tiptoed around the subject with her throughout the season, Joan finally took a good look at her life and noted that Andrew does not fit into her future. Before she has the chance to officially break up with him, a sip of coffee from Joan’s cup sends him to the ground.

This week on ‘Elementary’

“The Female of the Species” will find Joan taking some time away from her investigative work as she processes Andrew’s death. This will leave Sherlock and Detective Bell to pick up some casework without her. But Joan is not sitting idly by. In the preview for this week’s episode, Andrew’s father has some unfinished business with his son’s ex and Joan pays an old friend a visit.

Synopsis: “An unexpected event brings Watson into contact again with Elana March, the crime boss she brought to justice. Also, with Watson distracted, Holmes enlists Detective Bell to join him in a temporary partnership to solve a theft at a local zoo.”
