Elementary season 3 is all about mixing up the show’s character dynamic. Meet the newest addition, who will appear in early 2015!

Joan Watson’s resume has undergone some heavy remodeling over the last few years. The former surgeon, turned sober companion, turned consulting detective and part-time private investigator, is about to add another title. EW reports that Stuart Townsend (Betrayal, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) will join the cast in the first episode of 2015 for a multi-episode arc.

Townsend will play Joan’s supervisor at a firm that has sought her expert investigating skills on numerous occasions. Seeing that the company, and perhaps he himself, could benefit from more of Joan’s involvement, she is offered a permanent position.

But how will this new role play out in Sherlock’s idea of partnership? The man just got used to using Skype to hash out their nightly think tank sessions!

Creator, Robert Doherty, says you can expect to see Sherlock uneasy in the face of another new element in Watson’s life. “When we meet Stuart’s character, Sherlock is finding out about all of this for the first time and has to figure out to what degree this might change the dynamics of the partnership again.”

We don’t expect him to keep quiet about it either!

Could Del be a love interest for Joan, who is already dating Andrew (Raza Jaffrey)? “Have you seen Stuart Townsend?” Doherty exclaims. “He was Dorian Grey for crying out loud! I won’t say he’s not an interest.”

As we already know from this week’s synopsis, Joan’s current beau, Andrew (Raza Jaffrey) will be the subject of Sherlock’s side project. Sherlock’s meddling may be enough to make Joan available to schmooze with her new boss.

If there is anyone who can juggle all of these men demanding attention it is Joan!
