Alfredo finally returns to Elementary tonight! What will his first encounter with Sherlock look like? Watch here in our exclusive clip!

Two years, three months, 27 days ago marks the last time Sherlock and Alfredo shared a doughnut in a space where the importance of sobriety dominated the conversation. Presently, the doughnuts and the supportive urge to stay sober have not changed, but Sherlock and Alfredo’s relationship has certainly seen a transformation.

After a tumultuous journey to the final shot of season 3, Alfredo has been M.I.A. on Sherlock’s newly paved road to recovery. Like every decision Sherlock makes in his life, the one not to see Alfredo has a well-thought out reason behind it.

In the context of sobriety meetings Alfredo was Sherlock’s pillar of support, someone he could not bear to fail. While the same goes for Joan, Alfredo does not have the benefit of living and working with Sherlock in another context. Alfredo only exists in a bubble of sobriety support. Near the end of season 3, Sherlock attempted to break out of that bubble because he saw Alfredo as more of a friend than a sponsor. While movies and talk of relationship woes advanced their friendship, their connections to the program that helped both of them could never be erased. If Sherlock failed the program, he failed Alfredo.

As season 4 continues to inch forward, Sherlock works double time to convince everyone around him, but mostly himself, that his failure does not diminish his strengths.

Alfredo is just one stop for Holmes on tonight’s Elementary. Sherlock and Joan will work with Detective Bell to solve the murder of an archeologist. Was it something he found in a recent dig that led to his death? The answer, oddly enough, might be hidden inside a video game!
