Ant-Man director Edgar Wright has just left Marvel’s pint sized superhero film over “differences in their vision of the film.”

In incredibly shocking news, it’s being reported that Ant-Man director Edgar Wright has officially left the project that he’s been working on with Marvel for nearly six years.

An official statement has been released detailing Wright’s decision to leave Marvel’s Ant-Man film adaptation:

“Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film,” a statement read. “The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.”

Ant-Man had been gaining steam as of late with Paul Rudd being cast as Ant-Man and Michael Douglas joining the film as Hank Pym. But this is an enormous blow to a film which was only being made based on director Edgar Wright’s vision of the film, which was seen at Comic Con two years ago.

While fans were busy wondering about who would play each character in Ant-Man, no one had any idea that Wright was having difficulties (or vice versa). This has truly come out of left field and we aren’t exactly sure how the studio can move forward after losing Wright.

Wright was undoubtedly the heart of this film, which was a big jump for Marvel, and without the director who was the major push behind the adaptation we’re curious if this will cause a massive delay in the film’s release despite the announcement saying there would be no delay.

Marvel clearly believe they’ll be able to find a new director as they state that a new one will be “announced shortly” in the official announcement. Reports suggest that a director has already been hired to replace Wright.

Ant-Man was originally headed for a July 31 release date, but it was recently moved to July 17, 2015. We’ll be sure to let fans know more as the story continues to develop.
