Following his divisive cameo in the Game of Thrones season 7 premiere, Ed Sheeran deleted and then brought back his Twitter account.

Update: Ed’s Twitter account came back online Tuesday night. He still hasn’t explained exactly why he deleted his account. No tweets have gone up post-return.

Original story: Singer Ed Sheeran has deleted his Twitter account — formerly @edsheeran — less than 24 hours after the Game of Thrones season 7 premiere episode, in which he appeared as a Lannister soldier-slash-bard.

The performance drew very mixed reactions from viewers. Some fans were thrilled to see Sheeran interact with Maisie Williams’ Arya and perform “Hands of Gold,” a beloved song from the George R.R. Martin book series, while others questioned the decision to include such a recognizable star to essentially play himself in the otherwise very immersive, fantastical world of Game of Thrones.

While there’s no proof that Sheeran deleted his account as a result of the backlash that followed his appearance, The BBC notes that, even though he’s previously taken social media hiatuses, this is the first time the singer has deleted his Twitter account completely.

Sheeran’s Instagram account (@teddysphotos) remains active, and he has posted several images of his Game of Thrones character:

Ed Sheeran will next be drawn into The Simpsons, where he’ll voice a musician named Brendan who’s at the center of a love triangle between Lisa Simpson and Nelson Muntz.

Ed Sheeran was the most recognizable, but far from the first, musician to appear on Game of Thrones. Previous cameos include Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Coldplay drummer Will Champion, Sigur Rós and Mastodon.
