We learned just about a month ago that Lionsgate wanted Philip Seymour Hoffman for a pivotal role in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and now that deal appears to be done.

UPDATE: Lionsgate has now confirmed the news!

E! Online, which is a sometimes-sketchy source, has learned that Hoffman officially signed on to play Plutarch Heavensbee earlier this week:

“The deal was made right before the Fourth of July holiday,” one source said.

Lionsgate does not comment on casting until something is official. An announcement about Hoffman is expected to be released any day now.

Good Hunger Games fans know that Plutarch is the Head Gamemaker in Suzanne Collins’ sequel.

If true, this is the first new cast member officially signed on to the film (that we know of).
