Three-time Maze Runner director Wes Ball is speaking out about Dylan O’Brien’s on-set accident, which left the actor hospitalized.

O’Brien, who plays Thomas in The Maze Runner series, was injured in an accident on the set of the third film The Death Cure on Thursday in Canada. Now Wes Ball is reacting to the news and reaching out to fans.

“Well, it’s been a whirlwind of emotions these past few days,” Wes said in a handwritten note posted to Twitter Saturday. “I’ve been overwhelmed with feelings of anger and sadness and guilt. But, I ultimately find myself left with just a deep love and respect for Dylan. He is one tough cookie. I’m sorry for the grief this accident has caused his friends and family as well as my wonderful cast and crew. It’s scary seeing your friend get hurt, but fortunately, Dylan is going to be just fine. After a few weeks of rest and recovery he’ll be back up and running to finish our adventure together.”

By the sounds of Wes’ note, they are hoping to resume shooting in a few weeks once Dylan recovers. This is a plan that was also hinted at in a statement from Fox on Friday: “Dylan O’Brien was injured [Thursday] while filming Maze Runner: The Death Cure in Vancouver, Canada. He was immediately transferred to a local hospital for observation and treatment. Production on the film will be shut down while he recovers,” they said.

Other cast and crew, including The Maze Runner author James Dashner, tweeted about the accident on Friday.

Reports about the extent of O’Brien’s injuries have varied in detail, but they all agree that the actor suffered at least one fracture, possibly on his face.

The Maze Runner: The Death Cure is currently scheduled to hit theaters in February 2017.
