Magic was in the air on Disney Night at DWTS – always one of our favorite weeks of the show.

The show kicked off with a great group number to a rather weird version of “Be Our Guest,” complete with Val playing the violin, and was full of fun bits throughout the two hours. Our personal favorite was the dancing tiger from Zootopia dancing alongside our Troupe to welcome us back from commercial.

Zendaya was the guest judge this week, and she did an okay job. She didn’t exactly contribute much to the show, but at least she didn’t derail it either, and her scores were on point. At least it’ll be better than next week, when Maks is going to take up judging again, but it’s been so nice not having guest judges for a while.

Everyone was having too much fun, because the show very nearly ran over – at 9:52, Paige and Mark had yet to dance, and the elimination happened around 9:58. The couple eliminated and deprived of a Disney happy ending is… Marla and Tony!

It’s a shame, because Marla was fun, and Tony seemed to really be enjoyed their partnership. The judges harped on this week about how Marla needs to enjoy the experience, but it seemed to us that she was enjoying it just fine – this woman cartwheels to relieve stress, at the expense of rehearsal studio lamps! But even though Marla and Tony did a lovely waltz themed around The Little Mermaid, Marla won’t get to be part of our world for the rest of the season. That’s a shame, because Marla has a thing for mermaids, and used to dress up as one with her daughter. We would like to explore this further.

Marla hadn’t even been doing that badly – she had only gotten one non-seven throughout the competition (a six from Len in week 2). The problem was that her competitors had advanced to getting eights and nines, and all sevens no longer cut it. Marla should have stayed another week or so, and should definitely have outlasted Doug, but she needed to show improvement to make it further than that. And the judges have been fairly lenient – her waltz had barely a single bar in hold, and none of the judges even brought it up.

With that, let’s welcome our Disney-fied stars!

First Place (tie), 36 points: Ginger & Val. She really is a funny girl, that Ginger, and she did a fantastic job as Belle in her eponymous song. The production values were off the charts throughout the shows, but this number was the biggest of the lot – seemingly the entire cast of DWTS made up Belle’s French village, and Ginger and Val ended up foxtrotting around a fountain. So it was mighty impressive that Ginger still managed to stand out among all this, and execute some excellent foxtrot. Even more endearing, Ginger loves Belle as much as we do! She was perfect in the role, and Val looked great as her Gaston (apologizing to his mother for the fake ponytail), even though Maks is the Chmerkovskiy most like Gaston.

First Place (tie), 36 points: Paige & Mark. This was the rare misstep for the costuming department, since this writer has made a much more accurate Woody costume than the one Mark was wearing. The judges also seemed to have forgotten that you’re not allowed to break hold in the quickstep, since this Toy Story number was more out of hold than in it. Paige did a decent job, but we expect more of her and Mark after last week’s glorious UFC fight of a dance.

Second Place (tie), 35 points: Wanya & Lindsay. Wanya just can’t wait to be king of DWTS! He really loves Lion King, and opened his segment by holding up a mirrorball in place of Simba. His samba to “Circle of Life” had some really good sections of samba… and some rather bizarre gyrating sections sprinkled in. We like Wanya’s enthusiasm, but we’re not totally sold on his dancing (or Lindsay’s choreography).

Second Place (tie), 35 points: Antonio & Sharna. Antonio danced jazz to an utterly butchered version of “Friend Like Me,” and did a good job, managing to keep up with his genie backup dancers. But let’s be honest, the highlight of this number was seeing Sharna reprise her outfit as Jasmine (she was Jasmine to Noah Galloway’s Aladdin in “A Whole New World” a year ago). Please, let’s make Sharna as Jasmine a yearly tradition!

Third Place, 34 points: Nyle & Peta. Of course Nyle was Tarzan, dressed in only a loincloth! We all should have seen this coming, as Nyle made amends for his shameful overdressing on Latin Night. Even if Nyle wasn’t atop the leaderboard, this was probably the most impressive number of the night. Doing a very complex samba to “Trashin’ the Camp,” Nyle managed to hit every single beat perfectly, being in perfect sync with Peta during a content-filled routine. Like Tom, we have to keep reminding ourselves that Nyle can’t actually hear the beats he’s hitting. Peta also made an excellent point: she can’t coach Nyle mid-dance! We never even considered this. But in all the other couples, the pro will usually be yelling instruction to the celebrity throughout the dance; Nyle and Peta don’t have the luxury of course corrections once the dance starts.

Fourth Place (tie), 32 points: Kim & Sasha. This couple is adorable, and clearly having a lot of fun! Their quickstep to “I Wanna Be Like You” was perhaps the highest-energy number of the night, if not of the season. Props to Kim for keeping up! While she is not one of the stronger dancers left, we hope she sticks around for a while.

Fourth Place (tie), 32 points: Von & Witney. Witney set about trying to turn her brute of a football player into Prince Charming, which proved quite the acting challenge for Von. They did a really cute waltz to “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” complete with the actual carriage from last year’s remake of Cinderella. Witney looked beautiful as Cinderella, and the Prince Charming goal was seemingly achieved.

Fifth Place, 27 points: Jodie & Keo. The crowd around Jodie’s Zootopia-themed dance was so enthusiastically loud, Jodie couldn’t hear the music, which derailed their entire dance. Credit where it’s due, Jodie kept going and kept trying, but there was no salvaging this dance. Which is a shame, because a Zootopia-themed dance looked like it would have been a lot of fun (that, and “Try Everything” has been stuck in our heads for the past month). Hopefully this is not the end of Jodie’s mirrorball aspirations, but she needs to mount a serious comeback next week.

Last Place, 24 points: Doug & Karina. Call it the Curse of Mary Poppins – Mary Poppins numbers never go well on DWTS. On season 18, Charlie White fumbled his cane after practicing its twirls all week. On season 20, Robert Herjavec also got all sixes, his lowest score of the season. Doug did not escape the curse – he really struggled with his jazz routine, and threw a temper tantrum because this is the first time in his life he struggled with something. Yeah… comments like that don’t endear him to the voters, so between that and his scores, expect us to be a footballer down next week.

Who was your favorite (non-animated) Disney star of the week? Are you sad to see Tony’s little mermaid swim away? And what switched up couples do you hope to see next week?
