Latin Night came early this season, as DWTS dispensed with superfluous clothes for one of their most popular theme nights.

In a bizarre turn of events, all the best performances came in the first 45 minutes of the show, followed by an hour of meh performances. Now into the second week, we have a better idea of how this season will look — Nyle, Wanya, Ginger, and Paige are claiming early leads; Jodie, Marla, and the gaggle of football players are struggling to join the ranks of the leaders; Kim is decent enough to power through a few weeks, and Mischa has got to go in the next week or two.

But the first casualty of season 22 was Geraldo, and the one everyone actually mourned was Edyta, whose return to the ballroom was all too brief. Even if last week’s non-dance hadn’t been enough to eliminate him, Geraldo’s shenanigans this week would have sufficed. He thought it would be a good idea to add levity to DWTS by parodying his old friend Donald Trump. To that effect, he dressed as President Trump, and crafted a whole storyline about leaving Putin on hold while he has sexy time with Melania. This may be the most inappropriate DWTS number since Congressman Tom DeLay threw money in the air at the end of a dance (DeLay would later be indicted for fraud).

Bruno summed it up: It was “impressive for all the wrong reasons.” Furthering the analogy, there was a lot of bravado, but the content was questionable, he said. When Tom finally came out and asked what on earth possessed the couple to do this particular concept, Geraldo tried to spin something about having fun and people being too serious. Poor Edyta said, “We just wanted people to have a good laugh.” She seemed so defeated. Questionable content aside, Geraldo’s dancing was abhorrent — perhaps he was better off not even trying like he did last week.

This elimination unfortunately gives Edyta a new record — she is the only professional dancer to have been eliminated first three times (as in season 7 and season 9). She surpasses Jonathan Roberts, Keo, Tristan McManus, and her husband Alec Mazo, who have all had the dubious honor twice. Now, let’s celebrate Latin Night and welcome our scantily clad stars!

First Place (tie), 24 points: Paige & Mark/Alan. We have our first injury of the season. Mark hurt his back during dress rehearsal, so Alan Bersten stepped in to dance the salsa with Paige, and delivered by far the best dance of the season. They got Len’s first eight in the process. As Len said, Mark needs to be commended for this choreography — high energy, full of content, and having some truly impressive lifts. Paige adapted by using the mindset of her boxing opponent switching at the last minute, which says something interesting about how she views her partner.

First Place (tie), 24 points: Wanya & Lindsay. Wanya was doing a promising salsa, before he broke off the salsa to high five the crowd and breakdance and whatever else happened here. It looks like Wanya is going to be the star chronically overscored this season — he wasn’t much better than the other stars, and certainly nowhere near Paige’s level, but it looks like the producers want him in the finals.

Second Place (tie), 21 points: Ginger & Val. Ginger got the coveted going-last spot to end the night with a bang. Her storyline was about her issues feeling sexy as a new mom. But Flirting Sensei Val got through to her, because she delivered a fantastic samba. There were a few missteps, but that didn’t faze Ginger, and nor did the impressive choreography that was like catnip to Len. (Val is totally Len’s pet, being praised while the rest of the class is called out for not supplying recognizable samba moves.)

Second Place (tie), 21 points: Jodie & Keo. Jodie is already storming out of rehearsals from the pressure to get it right — that escalated quickly! But whatever she was doing worked; her samba was excellent. Sure, her legs are not as powerful as they will be in a couple weeks, but it was a great routine. Honestly, we expected to see some eights in there, but Jodie seemed happy with the sevens. When asked about dancing with a shirtless Keo, she said it was “slippery.”

Third Place (tie), 20 points: Nyle & Peta. Ironically, Nyle’s torso was covered up for the first time ever on Latin Night. He did a sultry rhumba, and much like the dance, the judges were all over the place. They penalized the couple for a blatant lift. Len was unhappy with the attack of the dance, preferring his Dance of Love to be less aggressive. Of course, it’s a big compliment that we are holding Nyle to as high a standard as anyone, and a slow dance like a rhumba would be tricky for him.

Third Place (tie), 20 points: Marla & Tony. Marla is proving competent at her dancing. Her Argentine tango was decent — she kept hitting beautiful poses, but her transitions were her undoing. There was one dismount from a split that was particularly awkward. In an unexpected turn of events, Len was the one who wanted more intimacy (usually Bruno’s domain). What’s happened to Len in his season off? We spent so much time talking about Marla’s hippie ways — Tony’s complete (though affectionate) derision is delightful. The topic was so ripe, we didn’t even get Marla’s thoughts on her ex-husband’s doppelganger. Alas!

Third Place (tie), 20 points: Football Player #2 & Witney. Witney has a get-rich-quick scheme of fining her partner $100 for each minute he’s tardy (which would’ve bankrupted this writer), each time he farts, and whatever else she feels is a transgression. The dance was a hot mess — per Len, a taco with some funny bits going on. But Von seems to take criticism in stride, so perhaps he’ll outlast the other two footballers.

Third Place (tie), 20 points: Football Player #3 & Karina. Putting Doug side-by-side with pro dancers did him no favors, though it’s a staple of Karina’s. Doug just could not keep up, and the perfection on either side only served to highlight how ungainly his movements were. He was in the Bottom Three, so here’s looking for a redemption storyline or a hasty exit.

Fourth Place (tie), 19 points: Football Player #1 & Sharna. “Have you seen Dirty Dancing?” Sharna asked. “I’m seeing it right now,” Antonio replied. Antonio accepted the invitation to rub up on Sharna in the romantic rhumba, but told Erin he had issues with it because of “blood flow.” Oy vey. As to the dance itself, it was okay, largely because we couldn’t take our eyes off Sharna to see what he was doing.

Fourth Place (tie), 19 points: Kim & Sasha. We got one of the truest fangirl moments ever when Sasha called Gloria Estefan to give Kim a pep talk, and Kim genuinely flipped out. Perhaps it’s unfair to judge Kim against Paige, but her salsa just seemed tepid compared to Paige’s 10 minutes ago. Kim messed up in the middle, and the choreography and dancing never quite matched the excitement of the music.

Last Place, 15 points: Mischa & Artem. Mischa is not someone who handles setbacks well. After a bad performance last week, she spent all week in rehearsal with major attitude, was a total sourpuss throughout the live show, and repeatedly offered up excuses (valid though they might be) of the band messing up the music during her dance. Expect her gone next Monday.

Who was your standout on Latin night? Are you sad to see Edyta depart? And which do you think is more subtle, Keo’s pants or his chest?
