It’s been a big week for The Rock. As of today the multi-million dollar star has been cast in not one, but two different films based around existing graphic novels. Neither of them are tentpole comic-book cash-cows like The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises, but you may recognize the name of at least one.

According to Variety via The Chicago Tribune the former wrestler turned action hero Dwayne Johnson will be starring in Hercules, a film directed by Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand) and slated to arrive in theaters by 2014.

If you’re expecting to see The Rock frolicking with fauns in a joyous animated feature, be wary. This film has promised to be a much darker take on the son of Zeus.

The graphic novel (Steve Moore’s Hercules: The Thracian War which was first published 4 years ago) deals with Hercules using his strength to become a mercenary before eventually rising to lead an army known for their ruthlessness.

Now word has hit this isn’t the only graphic novel that Johnson will be starring in.

According to Deadline (via First Showing), The Rock has also signed on to star in Ciudad, an action thriller based on the upcoming graphic novel by the same name and directed by the Russo Brothers (You Me & Dupree).

In Ciudad, Johnson will be playing a black market mercenary (sound familiar?) that must find the kidnapped daughter of a drug lord in one of the most dangerous and corrupt cities in the world.

What do you think? Do these coming films sound exciting? Which one are you more excited for?
