Young Rock, a single-cam comedy series based on Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s formative years, has just been picked up for a series order at NBC.

Dwayne Johnson certainly likes to stay busy.

The wrestler turned actor-producer turned international superstar starred in three films — two of them major blockbuster hits — and the HBO series Ballers in 2019, and will be filming the DC antihero film Black Adam (finally!) and the Netflix feature Red Notice this year, along with starting the press tour for his upcoming Disney release with Emily Blunt, Jungle Cruise.

Johnson will now be adding one more job to the pile, as the superstar, who apparently needs little sleep, announced over the weekend that NBC has given an 11-episode straight-to-series order to Young Rock, a comedy series inspired by his formative years of childhood and adolescence.

Dwayne Johnson will executive produce the series through his Seven Bucks Productions banner and is expected to appear in every episode.

Young Rock will likewise be executive produced by Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang, who are familiar with turning the childhood lives of celebrities into great comedy and high quality television as we’ve seen with Fresh off the Boat, the hit ABC comedy based on Eddie Huang’s childhood, which was created and written by Khan and Chiang.

Dwayne Johnson and Khan reportedly pitched the concept for Young Rock together, which is set to follow Dwayne Johnson from his early childhood years in grade school all the way up through his career in college football and the very early “40 bucks a match” days of wrestling.

Dwayne Johnson announced the show on his Instagram, describing his formative years as being “wild, unpredictable and unbelievable.”

“The show will feature Dwayne as he grows up through life,” NBCEntertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy said during the NBC’s TCA announcement of the project. “It’s Dwayne’s life brought to live by a brilliant and soulful writer like Nahnatchka.”

No word yet on when Young Rock will premiere.
