A new clip from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald debuted at the movie exhibitor conference CinemaCon on Tuesday evening, and it seemed to reveal a bit of information that we never knew about Dumbledore.

Press who attended Warner Brothers’ presentation said they saw a flashback scene in which then-Hogwarts Professor Albus Dumbledore teaches a class the Riddikulus spell. Hogwarts Student Newt, who is either played by a younger actor or a digitally altered Eddie Redmayne, gets a shot at facing a boggart. His turns into a desk because he’s afraid of working an office job.

(WB also shared a clip where Jacob jokingly tells Nicholas Flamel, “You don’t look a day over 375.”)

We’ve only ever been told that Dumbledore was a Transfiguration teacher prior to becoming the Hogwarts Headmaster, so the DADA revelation is certainly intriguing.

Of course, one could argue that it wouldn’t be crazy for a Transfiguration teacher to teach a spell to makes things transform, but consider this: The most recent trailer depicts Dumbledore in the same Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom used in the Harry Potter movies — take a look:

What we’re now wondering is A) Why Dumbledore was once a DADA teacher after all these years of only being told he taught Transfiguration, and B) Why J.K. Rowling wrote this scene for the movie. On the latter point, it’s at least a hint of Newt aspiring to have a unique job that didn’t keep him indoors. But could this scene, or other flashbacks to Hogwarts, also explain why Dumbledore takes up an interest in his former student during the 1920’s?

This is why I love this new film series. It gives us lots of new information that we get to speculate over. It feels like 2005 again!

Maybe we’ll find out more as we approach the movie, or maybe we’ll have to wait until Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opens in theaters this November. One thing’s for sure: We’ll be discussing this on a future episode of MuggleCast!
