The 1980s TV series The Equalizer is being remade into a film, and breakthrough director Nicholas Winding Refn will direct the reboot!

Sony Pictures will start the production this spring, with Denzel Washington in the lead role. Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2) will write the screenplay.

THR states Washington will portray Robert McCall, who is “a veteran covert operative who, seeking redemption for his dark deeds, quits a CIA-like agency and puts a classified advertisement in the paper that reads simply: ‘Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer.'”

Refn, who received high recognition for his work in Drive starring Ryan Gosling, beat out many directors who sought out this project, including F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job). Todd Black (Hope Springs, Seven Pounds), Jason Blumenthal (The Pursuit of Happyness), and Steve Tisch (Forrest Gump) are helping to produce the $50-$60 million budget film.

The original TV show aired for four seasons in the ’80s on CBS. Edward Woodward starred in the lead role.

The film is set to hit the big screen on April 11, 2014.
