An interesting bit of movie news to start off this holiday weekend! It has been announced that Drew Barrymore will be producing and directing the thriller Heist Society based on the young adult novel by Ally Carter. The project is being set up at Warner Bros. with Barrymore set to reteam with Whip It! screenwriter Shauna Cross. Hit the jump for more!

Here’s a brief synopsis of the plot:

The book follows a young woman named Katarina Bishop who hails from an extended family of cat burglars and master thieves. The girl leaves her illicit life behind, but when her father is the prime suspect in the case of a mobster’s missing art collection, she assembles a crew to track down the art and steal it back.

Barrymore plans on beginning production on the film as soon as she finishes with her current project, How to be Single. While not much information is known, word is that the story will be altered slightly to make the main characters slightly older than in the young adult novel. An interesting turn in Barrymore’s career to be sure. Is anyone at all interested in the project?
