Last night’s Downton Abbey series 4 premiere nabbed recording ratings for the beloved show.

Downton Abbey premiered to 9.5 million viewers in the overnight ratings, up from 8.6 million for the show’s series 3 premiere last year. Impressively, this number doesn’t count the number of viewers in the U.S. who may’ve watched the show using their own methods. PBS won’t begin airing Downton in America until January 5.

Last night’s Downton Abbey series 4 premiere kicked off with Lady Mary still having trouble dealing with the loss of her beloved Matthew Crawley who passed away suddenly at the end of series 3 during the show’s most recent Christmas Special. Episode 1 of series 4 was 90-minutes long.
