A scene from Downton Abbey series 4, episode 5 airing this Sunday on ITV depicts Lady Mary in a moment that we’ve been waiting for a while to see.

Portrayed by Michelle Dockery on the hit British ’20s drama, Lady Mary and Tom Branson meet in the nursery and are seen spending quality time with each of their children. As fans recall, Lady Mary’s child Master George lost his father Matthew, and Branson’s daughter Sybbie lost her mother Sybil. As the scene plays out, Lady Mary asks Tom if he thinks Sybbie is having a good childhood.

This is the first time in series 4 we’re seeing Lady Mary interact with her child. “I thought I’d get an extra ten minutes in before the gong goes,” referring to wanting to spend more time with George before dinner.

The widowed character had been leaving the child-caring up to the (now fired) nanny because she was still struggling with the death of Matthew, which happened on the same day as Master George’s birth. We had been wondering when Mary would finally be seen with her child, so perhaps episode 5 will kick off more regular appearances from George.

Downton Abbey series 4, episode 5 airs this Sunday, October 20 at 9 p.m. local time on ITV. Viewers in the United States must wait until January to see series 4 which is roughly half way through its British airing already.

The synopsis for the episode reads, “Change is in the air as an exciting opportunity for Alfred creates tension between Ivy and Daisy. Isobel appeals to Violet’s sense of charity, but it doesn’t come without a fight, and Branson considers a whole new future for himself and baby Sybbie.”
